Beyond the helmet man logo and the name, which evokes power and positivity, stands Nick Mayfield, the creative force behind the successful Soulful Commandoe. This self-started clothing line has pushed Nick’s dream of fighting for what you believe in through each individual piece he’s created, for consumers from LA to around the world. “I’ve always loved fashion, since I was a little kid. I’ve constantly been amazed by colors and cuts. My Grandparents’ 1940s, old southern Negro look had my attention from the start,” explained the 25-year-old from RIVERSIDE, California.
As you walk into the Soulful Commandoe shop off 6th Street in downtown LA, a museum-like atmosphere will captivate you and some of your favorite classic tunes will enhance your experience. “I’m happy to be at the location downtown. It’s a way to spread the positivity throughout the city and help people out. That’s what it’s all about.” His distinctive designs are all on display with reds and blacks that jump off the walls with the most primo pop.
When it comes to customer service, the shop carries a no-pressure vibe. There’s a personal, down-to-earth sentiment, with a mood that’s incredibly inviting. The reasoning and inspiration behind it all comes from an outside approach looking in. “If I walked in with a hater mentality, what would silence me and make me shut the fuck up? Whoever comes in is treated like family, because they’re the ones who are going to support your business. It’s so weird; when you go into certain places and they cool-guy you, it’s like, hey, he pays your bills.”
With only a few months under the time capsule, the shop sets its sights on a wicked winter line and continues to reach out far beyond its competitors. As for the inventive mind of Nick Mayfield, it’s about to become more attention grabbing, so stay tuned.
